Constanza is a multi-disciplinary artist from Mallorca who loves to create with clay, photograph and to art direct. With a background in both law and advertising, Constanza decided in 2022 to pursue her passion for visual arts. At her home-studio in Valldemossa she explores and creates unique ceramic pieces to celebrate women, their bodies and female sexuality. Aiming to remove silly taboos and being more open about itโฆ putting the subject โon the tableโ!
My main discipline at the moment is ceramics and photography, but Iโm happy to keep exploring other disciplines in the future.
Actually I have been photographing since I was a child, and some years ago I loved shooting in analog when I traveled. Itโs a slower kind of photography and allows me to connect better with people and be more in the details.
With ceramics I started to calm that unstoppable call to create and connect with myselfโฆ so I started to play with clay! The first classes I took were in 2020 in Mallorca and then I did some months of workshops in Amsterdam. I became addicted to the feeling of being able to create anything I had in mind!
To be honest I believe Iโm still on that journey? I feel that I am still learning every day, discovering what I like, what inspires me, what I want to express, what and how I would like to show my creationsโฆ itโs been an intense journey finally giving creativity the space it deserves in my life. Deciding to use my hands to create is the best and the hardest decision I ever made because of my background: I thought that not having โstudiedโ art or design would never allow me to pursue a life in the creative world. So after doing two years of creative art direction in advertising in Madrid and New York, many courses of photography and ceramics in Mallorca and in Amsterdam, I decided it was time to โjust go for it!โ.
Iโm inspired by the human body, I think itโs beautiful. I feel that my work is a celebration of women, our bodies and what weโre capable of doing with them. But some people that I admire and obviously influence me are Frida Kahlo, Antonio Gaudรญ, Michelangelo, Salvador Dali, Renรฉ Magritte, Ben Vautier, Richard Avedon, Matthew Williamson, Jessica Walsh, Florence Welch, Tamara K. Lloyd-Cox, Ela Fidalgo, Denisse Ariana Pรฉrezโฆ
My studio is in Valldemossa, where I grew up, at a house that belonged to my grandparents. Iโm surrounded by nature, which gives me the energy and the space I need to create. Always accompanied by some music, my cup of coffee with cinnamon and some incense burning.
My dream dinner party would be with all the people I love, together with Frida Kahlo, Chavela Vargas, Julio Iglesias, Lola Flores and Adele. Long big table, lots of flowers, candles and Mariachis. I would serve tacos, quesadillas, ceviche and tequila โ and of courseโฆ margaritas!
A movie I watched recently was โPoor Thingsโ by Yorgos Lanthimos. I thought the movie was original, fun, odd and unique, like the main character Bella โ amazingly performed by Emma Stone. Loved how she questioned, provoked and tried to break free from all the prejudices and limitations from her time โ also get ready for the beautiful sets and costumes. A book Iโm enjoying and just started reading is โThe Creative Act: a way of livingโ from Rick Rubin.
I think I would have liked to be a chef. Love to also be creative with food, mixing colors, flavorsโฆ and making other people connect and enjoy food around a table.
I do, Iโm two fish swimming in opposite directions! Pisces. Veeeery emotional, dreamy and empathetic. I love to wonder, and can be quite mutable too. Working with an element so tangible as clay helps me keep my โfeet on the groundโ while allowing me to โflyโ at the same time.
