Laura Rubio Bañón began the degree of Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage in the city of Valencia. She completed at TKS Köln, and finally at the University of Barcelona. During those years she continued painting, although her path did not think it was that way. But after starting in the world of conservation in institutions like MACBA, she was aware that her passion for art needed not only to be expressed by safeguarding it but also by creating it. In her different works at first glance, there is a common denominator: the creation of spaces to inhabit, the materialization of questions that have arisen and arise in the mind of being, and simply allowing the being to be. Contaminated by the search of happiness of the New age, the absence of disturbance, and the absolute wellness, the artist surrenders to her context with a centrifuge mind that goes a thousand per hour, a body that struggles to make intuition be heard, and a heart that does not want words that make her feel separate. Only with pictorial language, she does not feel that disconnection. Her fascination for astrology, with the expanded dimension of being that it offers, further help to enhance her interest in uniting psychology and art. The fact of observing the mirror that the other offers, shapes the self. All of this leads her to generate the Fuente Project, an experience through art that goes beyond a final result.
My main discipline is painting, but I like to explore painting on different surfaces such as traditional canvas, ceramics, mural painting or wood. Although I am a curious mind that also plays and creates ceramic shapes. Since childhood everybody paints and creates but then just some of us never stop. I officially started drawing and painting lessons when I was seven years old with a wise and traditional mallorquin lady. Painting has always been my safe space and being creative always makes me feel alive.
Honest answer: my whole life. But being objective, since I studied Conservation and Restoration on Cultural Heritage at University and then working surrounded by masterpieces, even though I like it, I realize how strong was my passion to create. So then I focused on discovering my own visual language in my artworks, participating in expositions, learning different things like astrology and mysticism that genuinely inspire me and somehow I started to sell with galleries, by myself and participating in art interventions.
It is very difficult to choose but the key ones are Giorgio de Chirico, Dalí, Magritte, Matisse, Niki de Saint Phalle, Xavier Corberó, Munch, Hilma af Klimt, Andy Warhol…
But I also discovered contemporary artists thanks to social media like Camilla Engstrom, Pilar Zeta, Ines Longevial and more.
My studio and home is mostly all one, I like to work with a lot of intimacy, solitude and in a very comfortable space. It is close to the beach and from the window I just see trees and a lot of cats playing around. I like to observe them when I am stressed out.
But I am visualizing my future studio apart and I hope it happens soon.
If I can dream I would mix my best friends and people I would like to have a conversation with like Alejandro Jodorowsky, Dalí, Andy Warhol, Rosalia, because I am fascinated by their books, performance, music, paintings, behavior, knowledge…
It would be a big table with candles, wine, and a lot of snack food like tortilla, hummus, spring rolls… so many different options.
The most recent was Blonde and wow. I was intrigued about the story, but then how it is explained, the effects, the symbolism, the actress etc. I know it is a controversial film, but I think its value is undeniable.
For the book – The art of stealing fire by Liz Greene. It is about the Prometeo myth, Uranus and astrology.
I have thought a lot about this and I think I would be a psychologist. I am so fascinated about the human mind and there are a lot of alternative ways to explore so I think it is a creative, interesting and helpful job.
Yes, I do. I am very proud of my aquarius star sign.
