Vera Edwards

Born in California and raised in Mallorca, the painter Vera Edwards travelled the world and lived in multiple global locations before returning to Mallorca six years ago. Today, she lives in a small beach town on the southeastern coast, making oil paintings in a studio that was formerly her grandmother’s home. “I’ve been drawing and painting since I was little,” she tells Trobat. “But it wasn’t until I was around 17 that I decided I wanted to pursue it in my life.” Read her interview with Trobat AND SHOP HER EXCLUSIVE COLLECTION OF PIECES ON TROBAT.CO BELOW.

What was your journey to becoming an artist?

A few of my family members are artists, so it was around me as a child, but I feel like it was only recently that I found my true voice in my work.

Who are the key artists whose work inspires your own?

Peter Doig, Paul Gauguin, Willem de Kooning, and Hilma af Klint.

Tell us about your studio?

My studio is in the countryside in the south east of Mallorca. I have been painting here for years now, but also living here since the pandemic. It’s a very special place to me, and very peaceful, a perfect place to paint looking over San Salvador right ahead. No distractions, a place to disconnect from the world and be creative.

Who's on your dream dinner party guest list, and what do you serve?

Joan Miró, Jesus, Frida Kahlo, and Hilma af Klint.

What's a film you watched and book you've read recently that had an impact on you?

Peaceful Warrior by Victor Salva and The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle.

If you weren't an artist, what would you have been?

I would probably do something related to helping animals.

What is your star sign and do you believe you embody it?

Aquarius, and yes!
